Sir Patrick Geddes

1854 - 1932

A Scottish Genius

Ballater, Royal Deeside,
Scotland

“This is a green world, with animals comparatively few and small, and all dependent on the leaves. By leaves we live. Some people have strange ideas that they live by money. They think energy is generated by the circulation of coins. Whereas the world is mainly a vast leaf colony, growing on and forming a leafy soil, not a mere mineral mass: and we live not by the jingling of our coins, but by the fullness of our harvests.”

Dear Mindy Grewar,

I would like to inform you about my new book publication on

"Stadtplanung in der Wissensgesellschaft".
("Urban Planning in the Knowledge Society").

There are many references to Patrick Geddes in
several chapters of that book, e.g.:
Planning theory, structure and ecological planning, international references in urban planning, utopian thinking in urban planning, etc.

The book is written in German, but there is also
a web-site in English available:

http://www.urban-is.de/Annex/HTML/Start.htm
http://www.urban-is.de/Annex/HTML/Deutsch-englisch.htm
http://www.urban-is.de/Default-engl.htm

The book is in print and will be delivered in June 2005.

Best regards,

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Streich
(Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Germany)
e-mail: streich@rhrk.uni-kl.de

ps: Greetings to the nice town of Ballater!
We have good friends, who live there.
The golf course is excellent ...
