Ruins of incomplete Roman Catholic Chapel at Dalfad
With (pictured) inscribed stone coffin lid. This site is hidden away in a birch forest, yet only 200 metres from an existing track

The Concept
To improve the conservation and interpretation of the archeological, historic and natural heritage of Upper Deeside: an attempt to bring a small number of archeological sites to a wider audience, visitors and locals alike. The vast majority of the sites chosen, from pre-history to the Second World War are little known, and therefore little visited.

Old Settlement of Auchtavan
Believed to have been abandoned in the early 19th century

It is intended that the project will educate and create access to groups of all ages and will enhance the walking experience in Upper Deeside. It is hoped that by making the public more aware of these sites, the survival of our heritage will be ensured. This project will offer interesting, educational and scenic sites to visit.

Knock Castle
A simple stile can make access much easier

The project will be arranged in a series of excursions by vehicle, cycle or foot, or a combination of each. At least 50% of the sites will be easily available to wheelchair users. By providing such simple things as stiles, access to many sites will be made much easier. Access to the sites is mostly by existing tracks or paths, or by easy going walking.

MacDonald Aisle - Mausoleum in Upper Glengairn
Set in a mature Larch plantation.
A unique site, very hard to find without waymarking which we hope to provide.

Publications
A free one third folded A4 one colour map and description capable of getting anyone round the project. Available at Tourist Information Centres, hotels etc. A full colour, fully illustrated brochure will hopefully be produced in early 2003 also a web site and an A3 poster.

Footbridge at Dalfad
This bridge, if renovated, would give access to the remains of an abandoned settlement, a magnificent lime kiln and the remains of two chapels and a manse.
